NSW:Study shows NSW Drug Court is working

A study of drug-addicted offenders shows the NSW Drug Court is effective in reducing
drug-related crime.

Figures from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research show intensive judicial
supervision of drug-addicted offenders by the Parramatta Drug Court reduced the risk of
relapse.

The bureau undertook a study of all participants accepted into the Parramatta Drug
Court program between March last year and March this year.

The offenders were randomly allocated into either an intensive judicial supervision
group or a supervision as usual group.

The study found participants in the IJS group, who met more often with the judge, were
less likely to return positive urine tests and had a significantly greater number of episodes
of abstinence than participants in the SAU group.
